The Pen is Mightier than the Sword! November 22nd (Tuesday this year) is the perfect time to begin a daily handwriting practice. Choosing 1-3 letter formation(s) to write each day for 40-days consecutive days will bring you right to the end of 2011, (12/31/11 is day 40). During that time you will have successfully shifted neurological patterns in your brain, replacing outmoded patterns of thought with new more desirable ones. Each letter of the Vimala Alphabet has an energy, a soul-quality that, when written each day for 40-days, manifests that energy in your life. With 26 incredible soul-qualities to choose from, it may be challenging to narrow it down to just a few to commit to this practice, as they each have a way of vying for your attention! Not to be dismayed, because on January 1st, 2012 not only will you have completed a full 40-day cycle (YAY!), you will also have the opportunity to begin anew! A new year, a fresh start; what better way to enter it than by having completed a full handwriting cycle and getting to choose what qualities you wish to invite into your life next. I offer this invitation to pick up your pen (turquoise ink adds a little something extra!), get an un-lined journal,* and begin each day with this sacred practice. You’ve heard of walking meditations; this is a writing meditation. Try this and experience it for yourself! Not only does this process enhance your life experience, it has a ripple effect which has a positive impact on those around you. As each of us shifts our own consciousness, inevitably global consciousness will also shift. This lends credence to the old adage, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” *Can’t find a good quality one? Living my life in 40-day cycles has become a journey of self discovery. A journey of 40 days per letter becomes 1040 days, almost 3 years. I have completed this cycle twice since 2004. Each time, I am presented with abundant opportunities for growth and change ... transformation.

The exciting part of the journey is sharing it with others who are also committed to this daily practice. Touching base throughout each 40-day cycle, we inevitably share our experiences and notice common themes developing. Because each writer is on his/her own soul journey, unique experiences present themselves where individual growth is needed.

It is an amazing process. When I became comfortable with the letters flowing freely across the page, I decided to challenge myself by incorporating the use of my non-dominant hand in my daily practice. It is like learning the letter formations all over again! At first, they appear extra large and incredibly shaky.  Practice, practice, practice. I find myself becoming more comfortable with those awkward places within myself. I am more accepting, less judgmental.

Imagine, inviting these qualities into my life through the simple act of daily handwriting. So simple, so non-threatening, so do-able!

Why 40-days? This number has great significance. The Bible and other spiritual traditions have numerous examples of the power of 40 for transformation. Human gestation takes place in 40 weeks, a fetus is formed in the first 40 days, the great flood was 40 days and 40 nights. Moses spent 40 days on the mountain prior to receiving the 10 Commandments. Some cultures believe the soul inhabits the earth for 40 days after physical death. For the purpose of transformative handwriting, it is significant for the re-alignment of neurological patterns, or re-wiring the brain.
