Creating A Proper Reference Page For An APA Research Paper

A reference page is an inseparable part of your research paper. You are supposed to give information about the sources that were used in your piece of writing and give credit to other scholars in the field. If your paper covers any social sciences topic, you’ll be required to cite the sources in APA style. It isn’t difficult to meet all requirements of the American Psychological Association and create a properly formatted reference page for your paper as long as you are attentive and diligent.

  • Place your references at the end of your paper on a separate page.
  • Write “References” at the top and center the title. Don’t underline, bold, or italicize the title. Write it in the same font size as the whole research paper. Don’t put a period.
  • Arrange your sources in the alphabetical order. Refer to the authors’ last names to alphabetize your entries correctly. If you don’t know the author, alphabetize the entry by a title (ignoring the articles).
  • If the publication has more than one author, use an ampersand (&) before the last author’s name.
  • The first and second name of the author should be given as initials. For each entry, separate the name and initials with a comma and put a period after the initials.
  • Write the date of publication in parentheses after the author’s name. Put a period after the closing parenthesis. It may be just a year of publication. If you want to mention the month of publication, abbreviate it (except for May, June, and July).
  • If you want to reference a separate article, write its title immediately after the date of publication. Put a period after the title.
  • Follow the title or the date of publication with the name of a book or a journal in italics. For a book, capitalize only the first word of the title. For a journal, all major words should be capitalized.
  • After the title, list the city where the book or journal was published and the name of the publisher. Put a colon between these data and put a period at the end.
  • Left-align the reference list. Indent your text about half an inch except for a first line which should be flush left. This type of formatting is known as hanging indentation and it is commonly used in the APA formatted reference pages.
  • If you use online sources in your research paper, remember to provide the date of retrieval and a full URL address in your reference list. To present this information correctly, find the samples containing the Internet sources and refer to them.
